Artwork title: Cosmos i canvi: contemplant la comprensió catalana (Cosmos and Change: Contemplating the Catalan Understanding)

Cosmos i canvi: contemplant la comprensió catalana serves as a visual exploration of human existence, identity and cyclical life, deeply anchored in the Catalan cultural landscape. Embracing influences from Catalan philosophers like Salvador Espriu to biblical figures revered by Catalans, this moving image project merges past wisdom with modern interpretations, evoking dialogue on linguistic identity, cultural evolution and personal introspection. / Drawing parallels with challenges faced by my Korean heritage, the Catalan language accentuates the interplay between language, history and identity. The film’s foundation rests on quotations from iconic Catalan thinkers, narrated authentically in Catalan, wrapped in a visual palette inspired by Antoni Muntadas. These visuals transition between organic forms and vast cosmic expanses, alluding to life’s transient and eternal facets. / Executed in high-contrast black and white, the film pairs intense visuals with a profound male Catalan voiceover, underscored by an industrial electronic soundscape. The project culminates as a 5-minute film, intended for a contemplative setting, inviting viewers to engage deeply with cultural and linguistic diversity through the lens of Catalan philosophy. This endeavour not only offers an avant-garde experience but also sets a precedent for innovative moving image practice, celebrating the confluence of language, culture and identity.

I, Justin Kim (z5362324), stand at the crossroads of technology and art, currently in my third year at UNSW, pursuing a double degree in  a Bachelor of Computer Science / Bachelor of Media Arts. I have a keen eye for good design, which gravitates me towards graphic and motion design, combining visual creativity with the precision of digital media. My duality in these academic pursuits imbues me with a unique perspective, allowing me to seamlessly integrate design principles with computational logic. / But I’m not simply confined to screens and codes alone. There is this insatiable curiosity in me that attracts me in exploring the tapestry of the world’s languages and cultures. It is this thirst for knowledge that broadens my horizons, instilling an open-minded approach to life and design. My multilayered experiences at UNSW and personal ventures have built me a foundation to not only appreciate the nuances of diverse cultures but also to incorporate them into my creative process. For me, every design is a dialogue, every code an art and every cultural insight a step closer to universal understanding.
