Bianca Currey, ‘Fatal Climax’ 2023. Acrylic, oil pastel and graphite on canvas. 30 x 30 inches. Installation image courtesy of the artist.

My practice is driven by poetic observations of the natural world, one that is growing increasingly fraught in our ecological crisis. My diptych ‘Fatal Climax’ (2023) explores the annual anticipated event of bleached coral spawning on the Great Barrier Reef, capturing coral first yielding and then spawning. The frenetic graphite mark-making is contrasted by emotive, impasto-rich brushstrokes, imbuing the work with tension and mysticism.  Will the spawn rise to a fatal end in the humid waters or descend and live? My paintings seek to capture rebirth's orgasmic ecstasy and death's chaotic tragedy.
