Skye Wallace, ‘Tender Growing Pains’ 2024. Oil, pencil, pastel and acrylic primer on canvas. 81.3 x 108.4cm, 44 x 34cm.

Tender Growing Pains depicts a visual narrative of past selves perishing. The work was created using representation and figuration, thick and thin markmaking, gloss and matte textures, translucent and opaque oil paint, and symbols of life and death. Subtle dichotomies allude to a contradictory nature of being. Employing self-portraiture, the paintings are a means of self- exploration, reflecting experiences of trauma and the subsequent purging of past identities in an attempt at self-reformation.
