“I hope to make good diagnostic care as affordable as water, or any basic service. I always find it interesting how we have instant access to many things – food, taxis, flights etc., but in our most vulnerable moments seeking healthcare, we wait for many hours for someone to see us. That's not acceptable".

It’s good to know what good looks like

Naturally curious, Dimitry Tran was born a life-long learner.

Throughout his childhood in Vietnam, Dimitry's life was shaped by personal experiences that fed his curiousity and ignited his passion for improving healthcare accessibility and affordability.

Suffering a stomach ulcer at 12 was a defining moment. Witnessing the challenges faced by his family and the broader community in accessing healthcare set him on a path to solve the problem.

Solving scarcity and inequality in healthcare

Dimitry and his younger brother, Aengus, set out to address the scarcity of medical professionals and the resulting capacity constraints. Co-founding Harrison.ai was the first step - harnessing the power of artificial intelligence to alleviate this crisis.

I realised the problem isn’t building expensive equipment; it's scaling the capacity of healthcare. AGSM offered me the holistic business view I needed to start the change”.

Dr Aengus Tran (UNSW Doctor of Medicine (MD) 2018) — a medical doctor and AI engineer, leads the charge as CEO of Harrison.ai. The brothers' complementary skills and shared commitment to their mission have been pivotal in the company's journey to transform healthcare through technology.

The power of AI is its ability to analyse vast amounts of data with speed and precision that human professionals alone just can’t match – no matter how good they are”.

In healthcare, the issue is not so much the availability of expensive medical equipment but the limited number of trained medical professionals.

Radiologists, for instance, have a big backlog of scans to review, delaying diagnoses and potentially compromising patient care. Harrison.ai’s vision is to empower healthcare professionals, such as radiologists and pathologists, with AI tools that boost their capacity to deliver faster, more accurate results, ultimately improving patient outcomes.

AI is a force multiplier for healthcare professionals. It can help bridge the gap between the growing demand for, and the limited supply of, skilled practitioners, ultimately making quality healthcare more accessible”.

Single-minded multitasking

Dimitry wears many hats at Harrison.ai. In the early stages, he was fully hands-on, overseeing everything from accounting and financial statements to hiring the first employee.

Now Chief Business Development Officer, his role involves finding the right market fit for Harrison.ai products, but Dimitry says getting there challenged him every step of the way.

Embracing adaptive leadership to change global health

Dimitry already possessed a strong background in finance and accounting. But taking on transforming the complex, highly regulated healthcare sector posed a multitude of new challenges, including varying national healthcare systems, health economies and workforce issues.

“Back then I was managing a team of three, all in Sydney and I wanted to become a leader with a global reach. The company we’re heading today has 200 people across six countries. AGSM was instrumental in helping me to reach my goal as an adaptive global leader.”

Leaning into adaptive leadership principles during his MBA gave him the new skills he needed to mobilise others and lead with curiosity.

Gaining a holistic understanding of business and leadership with AGSM @ UNSW Business School

Dimitry decided to pursue an AGSM MBA in 2016 after researching the course and talking to AGSM alumni.

His MBA gave him the concepts, tools and frameworks to navigate the intricacies of the healthcare industry. He was able to broaden his horizons, gaining insights into various facets of business, including marketing, strategy, and human resources.

“We’re past the start-up stage and in the ‘messy middle’. And I’m constantly revisiting all the concepts I learned at AGSM and the network I gained - and finding both super-valuable”.

Dimitry's AGSM education equipped him with the ability to integrate knowledge and apply it to real-world situations, making him a more versatile and effective leader.

He had no intention of becoming a marketing or HR specialist, but his MBA gave him a deep enough understanding to: “Know what good looks like,” and that’s made a huge difference to his ability to recruit and lead top people in many fields.

"AGSM gave me the theoretical foundation and practical frameworks to tackle complex business challenges. It enabled me to unite diverse skill sets, to overcome obstacles on my journey to revolutionise healthcare."

Creating a culture of collective impact

At Harrison.ai, they value what Dimitry calls "humble high achievers." The focus is on collective impact rather than individual recognition.

Their core value is to do the best work of their lives, fostering an environment where every team member is encouraged to bring their best to work.

“I’m fascinated by the magic of having one plus one equal 10 when you bring people together and they come up with things each of us can't deliver.”

People are drawn to join Harrison.ai. because of its mission's significance. Dimitry's leadership inspires individuals to be part of something bigger than themselves.
