Overview
Digital competencies are now an inevitable skill as organizations are progressing through digital transformation. The Introduction for Digital Engineering course makes ready knowledge professionals on the front line of this revolution to prepare for this transition.
This short course will introduce the broader aspects of digital transformation and provide you with the critical knowledge and skills that are essential to comprehend digital engineering approaches. It will help you to understand emerging technologies like AI, ML, Digital twin, etc. as a critical tool and their applications in real-world problems. Further, this course will provide foundations for utilizing the lifecycle Modeling framework as a thinking tool (to conceptualize integrated digital engineering ecosystems). It will also assist you to know the treads of digitalisation.
No prior knowledge is assumed.

- Overview of Digital Transformation.
- Fundamentals of Digital Engineering competencies.
- The value proposition of a more well integrated digital engineering ecosystem.
- Fundamentals of Data engineering.
- Discuss the potential uses of ML and AI to increase the utility of DE.
- Concepts of Lifecycle Modeling Framework and an overview of model-based systems engineering.
- Digital threads in a system.

This introductory course is for anyone who is new to Defence Capability Positions or any Industry Professionals seeking to gain the Digital Engineering competency baseline (fundamental knowledge of Digital Engineering) to understand the skills required to successfully implement DE. The content in this course can be applied to a range of industry sectors with desire to successfully work within a digital environment including broader Defence, other Government, Logistics, Manufacturing, Information Technology, Security and more.
Facilitator
Dr. Sumana Biswas
Dr. Sumana Biswas is a Research Associate at Capability Systems Centre at the University of New South Wales, Canberra. She holds PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of New South Wales. She is a multidisciplinary researcher and her research and teaching interest include using technology decision making, capability model development, autonomous systems planning, artificial intelligence, data-driven optimization, and simulation models in real-world problems. She has published widely including journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. Currently, she is collaborating with the Department of Defence on a simulation-optimisation based project.
