Research Abstract

Contact lenses can correct short and long-sightedness but up to 30% of contact lens wearers discontinue wearing contact lenses due to discomfort. In recent years there has been a massive increase in refractive errors in children due to working more indoors and using electronic devices and this has led to an increase in the use of contact lenses, including myopia control lenses, in children.
The reason that contacts lenses are uncomfortable during wear is not fully understood. Whilst there is evidence that comfort with daily disposable contact lenses is better than daily wear lens wear, there are still reports of discomfort with daily disposable contact lenses. Furthermore, the design of these studies has been questioned as potentially being biased in the TFOS report on contact lens comfort.
Discomfort with lenses has been reported to involve changes to the conjunctiva and the eye lids, especially the meibomian glands and their lipid secretions. The significant contribution of meibomian gland function to contact lens discomfort is indicated by the association between meibomian gland morphology and the expressibility of secretions, higher grades of meibomian acini secretion reflectivity with ocular symptoms in lens wear. Several biomarkers have been shown to be correlated with contact lens discomfort, such as cytokines However, these have only been examined in single reports and so it is important to confirm the association using new populations. Hence, these biomarkers will be examined for correlations with comfort in the current study. Also, the effect of lens polymer on these changes is yet to be identified nor have the changes been examined during daily disposable lens wear.
