Between 2000 and 2022, the Psychosocial Research Group, under the leadership of Professor Bettina Meiser, School of Clinical Medicine, UNSW, has been conducting nationally and internationally recognised research in the area of the psychological and behavioural implications of genetics and related areas. As part of its research, the group developed and tested educational resources in the area of genetics, using funding from the National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia, the Cancer Council of New South Wales (NSW), the Cancer Institute NSW, the Australian Research Council and Cancer Australia.ÌýÌý
Resources include decision aids for patients with, or at high risk for, cancer, including online and low literacy decision aids. The group has also developed resources for people considering prenatal screening, a psychoeducational website for people with a family history of depression, a low-literacy booklet for patients undergoing radiation therapy and an innovative online resource to train oncology health professionals in how to best communicate with people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
