Community-led Research, Government Data, and Indigenous Data Governance

Quantitative data relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have largely been collected and used according to the paradigms and agendas of government agencies and non-Indigenous researchers. This has led to research that is predominantly deficit focused and fails to address the needs and priorities of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Indigenous scholars have been leading critical efforts on the rights of Indigenous peoples to control their own data through Indigenous Data Sovereignty and Indigenous Data Governance.

In this second Yuwaya Ngarra-li webinar, you will hear from the UNSW-based research and evaluation team on the approach of the Dharriwaa Elders Group-UNSW partnership to community-led research, government data and Indigenous Data Governance, including the development of a data linkage study focused on Aboriginal children and young people in Walgett.
