Dr Hoa Thi Mai Nguyen (PhD, University of Queensland, Australia) is an Associate Professor in the School of Education, specialising in teacher education/development, mentoring, TESOL education and sociocultural theory. She has co-ledTeacher Education and Development Research Groupinthe School of Education, UNSW.Prior to this position, she worked at the University of Sydney from 2012-2015. Her research excellence has been recognised by a number of awards such as Dean’s Award for Higher Research Degree Excellence (UQ), Research Recognition Award for Early Career Researchers (ATEA); Endeavor Fellowship Award (Australian government). Her publications include 50+ peer reviewed journal articles and book chapters, 3 co-authored books and 3 co-edited books, along with publications for professional audiences. Being active in research allows her to incorporate her research interests into teaching to create an intellectually engaging, and challenging learning environment. She enjoys working with ECR researchers, preservice and in-service teachers in the role as mentors and has a strong passion to develop teachers’ professional learning.
She was the Post Graduate Higher Degree Research Director at the School of Education from 2020-2022. She is currently the Director of Doctor of EducationDegree Program. She has supervised over 15 PhD students. Her supervision/mentoring excellence has been recognised by a number of awards such as Outstanding Research Supervisor Award (UNSW Postgraduate Council), Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Higher Research Degree Supervision, and ADA Staff Award for Excellence in Research Mentorship.
She is an Associate Editor of , and an Editorial Board Member for Current Issues in Language Planning. She is an editor for the Cambridge Elements She has also held visiting and honorary positions at University of Sydney, Kings' College London, University of Leeds, and University of Oxford
