Professor Lucas Lixinski
Lucas Lixinski is aProfessor at the Faculty of Law & Justice, UNSW Sydney. Prior to joining UNSW, he was a Postgraduate Fellow at the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Center for Human Rights and Justice at the University of Texas School of Law. He holds a PhD in International Law from the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), an LLM in Human Rights Law from Central European University (Budapest, Hungary), and an LLB from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (Porto Alegre, Brazil). He researches and teaches across a range of fields in international law, primarily international cultural heritage law and international human rights law. He sits on the Board of Editors of ESIL Reflections, the International Journal of Heritage Studies, the Santander Art and Culture Law Review, and the European Convention on Human Rights Law Review. He is also a co-founder and editor of , a blog of the Brazilian Branch of the International Law Association devoted to Global South engagements with international law.
He is the Director of Studies globally for the , the world's oldest learned society in the field. Further, he is an affiliate of the and of theEvacuations Research Hubat the Kaldor Centre for International Refugee Law atUNSW Sydney. His main current research project focuses on cultural heritage in contexts of massive social change and upheaval, bringing together insights from evacuation, forced migration law, and international human rights law. He is also working on a project on the history of international extradition law (with Pablo del Hierro Lecea, a historian from Maastricht University), and a project on how international human rights courts and tribunals influence social movements' advocacy beyond strategic litigation.
His 2020 co-edited commentary to UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention (Oxford University Press) (with Janet Blake) received the American Society of International Law's Certificate of Merit for high technical craftsmanship and utility to practicing lawyers and scholars.
He is a regular contributor to print, radio, and television media. He is featured regularly in Times Higher Education, SBS Radio (in Spanish), and also in outlets like ABC News, the Sydney Morning Herald, and others.
