UNSW Sydney 2025 International Student Admissions
Our latest updates and FAQs
Our latest updates and FAQs
International students have always been an important and valued part of UNSW Sydney’s vibrant student community. The University is disappointed some international students may not be able to study at UNSW in 2025 due to the Australian Government’s proposed international student enrolment limits as part of Education Services for Overseas Students Amendment (Quality and Integrity) Bill 2024 (ESOS Bill).Ìý
While this policy amendment is still being debated as part of the legislative process and has not yet been passed, UNSW is making changes to our offer approach for New Overseas Commencing Students (NOSC) to streamline the admissions process and ensure UNSW does not exceed its proposed enrolment limit.
Offers to study at UNSW Sydney in 2025 will be made in specific rounds, with the following key changes applied:
Our focus remains on working through the implications of the changing Australian higher education landscape as quickly as possible. We will continue to communicate the latest information and update our FAQs as the situation evolves. Please check this page regularly for updates.
The Australian Government recently proposed changes to the legislation which governs the delivery of education services to international students in Australia. The proposed changes may result in limits on the number of international students that can be enrolled and/or commence in programs provided by higher education institutions.ÌýÌý
Importantly, these proposed changes have not yet been made and, as of 18th November 2024, UNSW Sydney does not know whether the proposed changes will be made. We will continue to advocate with government as we are deeply disappointed by the proposed limits. Ìý
UNSW Sydney continues to welcome international students to our campuses as a valued part of our vibrant student community.Ìý
The proposed enrolment limits will likely apply to all newly commencing international students undertaking qualifying study from 1 January 2025 with some exemptions which include but are not limited to:ÌýÌý
Further, if you are progressing from an undergraduate to a postgraduate coursework degree at UNSW Sydney, you may be exempt from any limit.Ìý
UNSW Sydney does not know if, or when, this legislation will be approved. The Australian Government have announced that they aim to apply the enrolment limits from 1 January 2025.Ìý
UNSW Sydney expects that demand for our programs will increase. While we are unable to guarantee a place to current offer holders for undergraduate and postgraduate coursework programs, we recommend that you act early by meeting any condition on your offer and accept your place of study with us as soon as you can.ÌýÌý
In order to ensure that we can comply with any enrolment limits imposed by the Australian Government in the future, UNSW Sydney reserves the right to:ÌýÌý
to ensure that UNSW Sydney does not exceed any enrolment limit imposed by the Australian Government.
Please note that while UNSW Sydney reserves this right,Ìýyour offer to study at UNSW remains valid unless communicated otherwise by email or update to your status in our applicant portal.
At this stage, we are unsure on the impact that any proposed enrolment limits will have on our Term 1 2025 intake.Ìý If you are affected by the implementation of any Australian Government enrolment limit, then we will communicate options available to you at the time.ÌýÌý
The Department of Education have indicated that certain cohorts will be exempt from the enrolment limits.Ìý Refer to theÌýÌýfor more information and contact your agent if you believe you may be exempt.Ìý If you are not using an agent, contact UNSW Sydney enquiries teamÌýhere.
If you have commenced studies at UNSW College in a program packaged with a UNSW Sydney degree, a place will be reserved for you (provided that you meet academic, English language and any other admission requirements) for the degree and intake that was included in your package at the time that you accepted your offer.Ìý
Outside of this, the College will work with UNSW Sydney to assist all our students with their future study options at UNSW Sydney.Ìý
We do not know the impact of any proposed changes on study for 2026.Ìý
If you are a current student, you will not be directly affected by the proposed enrolment limits. The proposed enrolment limits are intended to apply to newly commencing international undergraduate and postgraduate coursework students from 1 January 2025.ÌýÌý
Should you wish to progress from your UNSW Sydney undergraduate program to a UNSW Sydney postgraduate program immediately after your undergraduate course, the University’s current understanding of the proposed legislation is that you will be able to do so without any impact from enrolment limits, provided you make an application for study and meet all other requirements.

Any new applications will be moved to ourÌýApplication Waitlist.
