Entry into this program requires an undergraduate degree in a relevant health discipline (nursing, psychology, social work, medicine, occupational therapy, or other allied health).
In exceptional circumstances, applicants with qualifications from non-relevant disciplines and/or extensive relevant professional work experience (e.g., Aboriginal health workers) may be considered.
English language requirements

You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.
If you’re completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.

Program structure
The Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Practice includes the following four compulsory courses:
(PSCY9020) Mental Health Assessment and Treatment:ÌýThis subject will give you an overview of the key principles underpinning mental health assessment and treatment decisions across all the mental illness category groups and treatment settings. You’ll also gain a basic understanding of key psychological modalities used in treatment, emphasising cognitive behavioural therapy, brief solution-focused therapy and an overview of other psychological therapies. Upon completing this subject, you can conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, provide initial diagnostic formulations and develop treatment plans.
(PSCY9021) Fundamental Psychological Therapy Skills:ÌýThis course will introduce psychological treatment modalities and provide a framework to select the appropriate treatment for a particular mental health disorder. The course will include various psychological therapy theories including, but not limited to, cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT), dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), mentalisation based therapy (MBT) and transference focussed therapy (TFT) fundamentals. By the end of this course, you will understand the theoretical frameworks of these therapeutic interventions and be able to implement aspects of each in your clinical practice providing patients with high quality psychological treatment. This course provides an opportunity for you to practice the skills you have learned throughout the course with the course convenor(s) who have expertise in the delivery of psychological therapies.Ìý
(PSCY9022) Philosophies of Mental Health Care, Services, and Systems:ÌýThis subject explores key mental health philosophies, including trauma-informed care, the bio-psycho-social model and multidisciplinary teamwork, least restrictive care and the recovery model. You'll learn about the construction of mental health services and systems, including navigating services and systems beyond mental health to meet patients’ needs.
(PSCY9023) Assessing Risks and Managing Challenging Behaviour:ÌýIn this subject, you’ll explore risk assessment, formulation, and management approaches, including structured professional judgement models. You’ll gain practical experience in applying clinical skills in risk assessment and management and in strategies for preventing and de-escalating risks, including acute emergency management of challenging behaviour.
