Research strengths
UNSW School of Humanities & Languages is recognised as a unique world-leading centre for research across the humanities and language studies.
Our research is focused around four broad areas: history, philosophy, language studies and human geography. Within those areas, we engage in research that covers topics ranging from ancient Greek and modern European philosophy, the history of migration and global empire, classical and modern Chinese literature, interpreting in legal settings, language revival in Australia and around the world, and investigating ways to better protect the environment.Â
Asian studies
Asian studies researchers explore pressing problems of the current era as well as ongoing puzzles about past societies. We seek to enhance progress towards the formation of just societies, social progress and economic prosperity, and environmental sustainability in the Asian region and Australia by disseminating informed discussion based on a deep knowledge of Asia.
Australian studies
Australian studies explores Australian history, culture, society and environment from its first settlement by Aboriginal people until the present. It plays a crucial role in developing informed and critically engaged citizenship and fosters analytical and creative engagement with Australia in its global relationships.
