Become a global citizen with International Studies

Our world is rapidly changing. Today, movements of people, environmental crises, flows of capital and new ideas shape our world and challenge who we are. These changes go beyond borders and require a considered and informed response. Studying international studies at UNSW will help you develop appropriate responses to these challenges.ÌýWe challenge you to examine these complex developments and teach you to interpret what they mean for society.

Prepare for a global career

Combining social sciences, humanities and languages, international studies at UNSW prepares you for a global career. Using a multidisciplinary approach drawn from a variety of social science perspectives, you’ll analyse what's happening in the world and think creatively about how to solve these challenges. Our courses in policy and social research, geographic area studies and languages will help you help you examine local, national and global challenges.

You'll develop knowledge and skills in public policy and foreign policy, international development, environmental issues, gender studies and history. To better work across cultures and borders our award-winning language programs assist you in developing  intercultural communication skills in Chinese, French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.

Learn from professionals with real-world experience

You'll learn from academics who have worked in careers across the world. Their international experience will teach you invaluable skills to propel your career in international studies. We'll guide you to understand the complex factors behind global events like natural disasters or significant political shifts as well as the connections between local, national and global challenges.

Examine the ways governments struggle with changes in the global economy, the flow of refugees, relations between developed and developing countries, human rights, security, and environmental crises. You’ll get hands-on, one-to-one career advice in seminars while also sharpening your interview and communication skills.

Develop professional skills to meet global challenges

UNSW places a strong emphasis on developing career-ready graduates with global employability.ÌýWe've been named AFR's Most Employable University for the fifth consecutive year. Studying international studies will develop your professional capabilities through opportunities like overseas exchanges and professional internships.

Undergraduate students can take part in a professional internship as part of the degree to provide real-world context to your studies. You can also go on an overseas exchange with one of UNSW's partner institutions. We provide the opportunity to go on a one-year student exchange to one of our 300 partner institutions across the world. Before embarking on an international career you'll also choose a language to learn to strengthen your skills for a career that goes beyond borders.

The unique design of our program is valued by local and international employers. UNSW international studies graduates have secured jobs in international organisations including the United Nations (U.N.), NGOs, federal government agencies, consultancy firms, or progressed to research in the field.
