Indigenous Studies is a discipline that engages, contests and builds on earlier understandings of Indigenous societies developed through the disciplines of anthropology, archaeology and linguistics and as viewed through the Western imagination. Indigenous Studies at Nura Gili develops and challenges our understanding of the contemporary position of Indigenous peoples in Australia through centring Indigenous knowledge and methodologies. It brings Indigenous issues into the realm of academic inquiry in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Education and Law.

Our areas of supervision are:

  • Indigenous Sovereignty, Self-Determination, Nationhood, Self-Government.
  • Aboriginal education, including history of Aboriginal education.
  • Country-centred/place-based learning.
  • Indigenous research methodologies.
  • Learning and teaching in Indigenous higher education.
  • Indigenous histories, especially contemporary history and history of activism.
  • Politics of race and gender.
  • Museum studies and studies of material culture.

Eligibility

Admission to the Doctor of Philosophy degree requires one of the following qualifications:

  • a UNSW Bachelor's degree with first or upper second class Honours from UNSW
  • a completed Master by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high quality research thesis
  • an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC).
