Entrance requirements

The minimum requirement for admission to a Masters by Research is a relevant four-year Bachelor’s degree with Honours that includes a substantial research component; 

or

with the consent of the potential supervisor, a qualification or combination of qualifications considered to be equivalent by the Faculty of Science Higher Degree Committee.

Applicants must seek and obtain agreement of a BABS academic to be their supervisor prior to applying; this is a key requirement to gain acceptance. View the BABS HDR Information Booklet for supervisors and research areas. Identifying and negotiating with prospective supervisors is key to gaining admission, and you will need to align your topic of interest with the research area of one of our School’s academics.

Program objectives

Each masters program is an advanced area of study where graduates may obtain specialist knowledge in a particular area of science. These research programs focus on training students to be innovative and independent. Students are required to dedicate most of their time to research and the preparation of a masters thesis.

Program requirements

The BABS Masters by Research program is normally two years full-time in duration (96 UOC) and requires preparation of a written thesis. The length of a masters research thesis normally should not exceed 75,000 words. Once completed, the thesis is examined by members of the Australian and international scientific academic community.
