  • The content of the course was interesting and helped me to develop knowledge of microbiology. The lab component was organised efficiently and was very practical, helping me apply theory into practice. All lecturers and tutors were encouraging and delivered their knowledge to a high standard.
  • The content of advanced science helped me synthesise the knowledge from previous second-year BABS courses. The lecturers were engaging and demonstrated how our theoretical knowledge can be used in the real world. The practical component was equally engaging. The molecular techniques presented solidified my understanding of intricate processes that underpin every cell.
  • I am thoroughly enjoying my PhD in biochemistry and molecular genetics at UNSW. My supervisor, lab group and peers within BABS are incredibly supportive and create an enthusiastic and collaborative environment. There is significant support provided by the Faculty of Science and BABS including opportunities through the Women in Maths and Science Champions Program. Support exists for travel, top-up scholarships and events such as the Postgraduate Research Competition and BABS Symposium.
  • UNSW BABS was a good fit for me, with its balance between fundamental molecular biology research, and practical applications. I was excited by the prospect of working in brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities – particularly for genomics research. Sharing a building with the sequencing facilities and expertise of the Ramaciotti Centre can really bolster your productivity. The campus’ proximity to Coogee Beach and the CBD was also a major plus.
I decided to pursue a PhD as I wanted to explore fundamental questions about the human genome: how does it make us human, and in what ways are we all unique? I wanted to contribute to this field, to chip away at the mystery with my own hands.
  • Conducting my PhD work in the School of BABS, UNSW has provided me with active mentorship and excellent research infrastructure. I have been given autonomy to pursue my PhD research interest. Completing my PhD at UNSW has helped me in my personal and professional growth. I encourage you to join this wonderful school and pursue a scientific career. I particularly value the opportunity to participate fully in the life of the school. My research benefited immeasurably from the enthusiastic help and support of my supervisors, peers and other colleagues. My time here has helped me develop the mindset and scientific skill I need to further pursue my career goals.
  • Completing a PhD in the School of BABS, UNSW has been a thoroughly rewarding experience. I have benefited from the school's highly diverse range of expertise across its many research groups. Expertise was always at hand when needed as I explored new areas. The school has a collegial, supportive and friendly atmosphere with regular seminars, workshops and events running throughout the year. This emphasises the value of collaboration and mutual guidance. The state-of-the-art resources within BABS have allowed me to conduct my research in an efficient and effective manner.
