Specialisation declaration

For many of our programs at UNSW, you’ll need to choose a specialisation, or focus area.

Declaring your program specialisation

A specialisation declaration (previously known as a stream declaration) is when you declare the area of study in your program you want to specialise in, for example, specialising in Accounting in a Commerce program or English in an Arts program. If you decide you want to specialise in something else, you can change your specialisation declaration.

  • Many UNSW programs require you to choose a particular area of study or specialisation. In undergraduate programs, these are referred to as majors and minors. Once you’ve selected a specialisation, you’ll need to declare it and complete specific courses to complete this specialisation.

  • For most of our programs, you can use the to:

    • View your current specialisation 

    • Declare your specialisation

    • Change your specialisation. 

    Not all programs use this service, so you might need to contact your Program Authority to declare or change your specialisation. The Specialisation Declaration service will indicate if you need to do this.

  • Try to decide on your specialisation early in your program, to minimise completing as many unrequired courses as possible. 

    For some courses, you may need to declare a specialisation to enrol. Declaring your specialisation also helps Schools to plan the number of classes and capacity required for each course.

    If you’ve been identified as a potential graduate, then you might not be able to declare a specialisation using the Specialisation Declaration service.
